National Reference Laboratory for bee diseases
The National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for bee diseases is a Statutory Research Task (SRT) initiated in 2019, and as such, falls within the contagious animal disease SRT. Statutory Research Tasks cover research needed for the development or enforcement of policies within the European or national legal framework.
The NRL’s core tasks are:
- Updating and sharing knowledge and expertise on notifiable bee diseases.
- Diagnostics of notifiable bee diseases in cases where a disease is suspected and for import controls.
The NRL is a collaborative effort of Wageningen Plant Research, researchers who add expertise on bee health and bee disease, and researchers from Wageningen Bioveterinary Research, who have expertise and skills in the domain of diagnostics.
The NRL can be commissioned to analyse samples for notifiable bee diseases.
What does that mean, a notifiable bee disease?
Which bee diseases am I required to report?
Four notifiable bee diseases have been formally included in Dutch and European legislation:
- American foulbrood
- Small hive beetle (Aethina tumida)
- Tropilaelaps mite diseases (Tropilaelaps clareae and Tropilaelaps mercedessae)
- Varroa mite (Varroa destructor)
However, there is no notification requirement for the varroa mite, only a formal status. The status is derived from the fact that there are places in Europe where the varroa mite does not occur and to ensure that these places remain free of varroa mites.
I suspect a case of a notifiable disease in Dutch territory. How should I proceed?
What do I do if I want to import bees from abroad to the Netherlands?
