Project
Internationale kennisuitwisseling water en klimaat
In this project, research is carried out into the pollution of surface water with nutrients and especially phosphate from agriculture, in order to achieve the objectives of the European Water Framework Directive.
In 2012 a project on European cooperation in relation to EU directives on water quality (Nitrates Directive; Water Framework Directive) was started, called Policy-Science Working Group on Reducing nutrient emissions from Agriculture in NW European Catchments. Policy makers and researchers participate in this group and the Netherlands coordinates and chairs it. A Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation between the countries has been drawn up (Belgium, Germany, Denmark, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Netherlands).
Topics covered are developments in water quality, quantification of the effects of legislation and measures on the improvement of water quality and quantification of the contribution of the various emission sources, and insight into additional emission reduction measures. The main objective is for the countries to collect and exchange information on the implementation of measures and legislation that improve water quality and to further explore the options of the envisaged measures and legislation.
