H2020 Agromix

This H2020 project examines whether combinations of crops, animals and trees (mixed and agroforestry systems) can contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation goals with a sustainable revenue model.

The project supports farmers and other actors in developing climate-smart systems (mitigation and adaptation), by combining animal, plant and woody production (mixed and agroforestry systems). Activities: developing an assessment system for climate-smart production systems, developing a multi-stakeholder design process and a substantive toolkit with 12 different pilots in different countries. In each of these pilots, a concrete design is made with relevant public and private parties from a chain or region. In the Netherlands, a regional pilot is planned in South Limburg1, in collaboration with the multi-year integrated Heuvelland area program.

The project delivers:

  • Critical Performance Indicators (KPIs) for companies and regions in the field of climate change;
  • A methodology for participatory design of climate-smart systems, including a sustainable revenue model;
  • A decision support toolkit for farmers and advisors;
  • Assessment of different systems on different KPIs;
  • An inventory of bottlenecks and opportunities in the value chain.

These results can be widely used by the agricultural sector when working on climate goals. KPIs will help monitor the resilience of agricultural businesses to climate change. The co-design approach and toolkits will be used across Europe to support innovation in the sector with tailor-made solutions that engage the entire value chain. All results of the project are public.

1 South Limburg is a unique part of the Netherlands because of the soil type (löss) and the height differences. The design methodology must be able to create a suitable design for different 'unique' situations. The design for Limburg may therefore not be generally valid, but at the same time it must demonstrate that the design methodology is situation-specific.
