Project
FoodE - Food systems in European cities
The aim of FoodE is to accelerate the development of food systems in and around the city (City Region Food Systems: CRFS) through cross-fertilization between local initiatives throughout Europe and analyzing best practices. These CRFS can vary from growers, producers, traders to infrastructure, supermarkets, interest groups, etc.
Specific goals within the project are:
- Improve the viability of food producers in and around the city.
- Improve the efficiency of production of crops with high nutritional value.
- Improve access to affordable, safe and nutritious food within European cities.
Various European citizens/stakeholders will be involved in developing tools to determine the sustainability, climate impact, revenue models, water and energy management, etc. of these food systems. These tools will also contribute to the feasibility and earning capacity of the CRFS, by taking into account local markets, climate and legislation, among other things. Specific deliverables within the project are:
- A useful methodology for the quantitative assessment of CRFS.
- Optimization and realization of urban horticulture systems or enterprises within the EU with input from local stakeholders. This will take into account the wide variety of climate and market conditions within the EU.
- A tool (app) to allow the public to assess a CRFS in terms of sustainability and other aspects relevant to consumers.
