Add_Management maatregelen onbehandelde reguliere hanen
Until 1 January 2023, a postponement has been granted for treating the hind toe in roosters of regular broiler breeders. Given the possible short term in which the intervention will be banned, it is important to implement promising solutions to keep untreated roosters.
Until 1 January 2023, a postponement has been granted for treating the hind toe in males of regular broiler breeders. So far, only the monitoring of flocks has been done where the effects of not treating the posterior small toe in males have been identified and are being mapped out. In view of the possible short term in which the intervention will be prohibited, it is important to apply promising solutions such as starting with a lower percentage of males, lower light intensity at the start of the laying period and an adjusted course of body weight. If these measures do not help, as an emergency measure the nails of the little toe can be clipped (pedicure treatment) before they can do more damage to the hens. In doing so, only the nails are cut and life is not affected, so that it is not an intervention but a management measure. To keep the stress as low as possible, the animals are treated in the dark if necessary. The flock is monitored to monitor damage in the females. In addition, the growth of the nails over time is also monitored and it is checked whether the treatment has to be repeated. The aim of this project is to monitor the effect of modified management on keeping regular males with untreated toes. Through this project we gain more insight into the possibilities of adjusted management to keep untreated regular breeder males. The results are processed in a memo and an article for the applied poultry magazine.
