Animal manure is an important resource for plant nutrition and should therefore be applied with great care. However, following application of manure on land significant amounts of ammonia are emitted to atmosphere which puts a pressure on nature and biodiversity. The aim of this programme is to reduce the ammonia emissions by means of innovative techniques. Careful and broad implementation of innovations that are developed is of great importance. This can be stimulated by collaboration of researchers with contract workers, machine manufacturers and agricultural practice. Moreover, innovations can be demonstrated in practice to test practical readiness.
This programme aims to halve ammonia emissions that are associated with manure supply in current practice by through technical innovation and showing the importance of careful use of available techniques. The programme seeks cooperation with the main actors in agriculture. We challenge professionals with practical concepts or innovations to join this collaborative programme where the innovations are taken up in a stepwise process of testing on semi lab scale and field scale and where results of research are judged to select the most promising innovations. In the research the focus is on ammonia emission but also side effects are addressed if relevant as well as readiness for practical implementation and liability of the techniques. Besides testing, the programme also invests in stimulating innovation by organizing experimental spaces and in adoption of innovations by farmers and contractors by organizing demonstration events. Results of the research are published in scientific journals and public reports.
