In This Here Place: Matters of Local and Global Interest in a Public Library
Thursday 27 March | Wageningen Campus Lumen building, Lumen 1 + online | 13:30 -15:00

Prof Hayden Lorimer, chair of Human Geography, University of Edinburgh:
"In this talk I’ll consider the place of a public library in the life of a city neighbourhood. I’ll do so twice over. In 1883, when the doors first opened. Then 140 years later, in 2023, when they permanently closed; the same point in time that the library building’s origin story resurfaced during a sustained community campaign aimed at reversing the closure decision.
My talk will weave together narrative accounts of various regimes of violence – historical and contemporary, global and local, military and economic, summary and slow – that all proved pivotal in making, and then breaking, the library. I'll be figuring the research on which my talk is based as a contribution to ongoing decolonial research that seeks to re-historicise specific civic landmarks and properties in Britain’s cities and countryside. I hope it will show how the compilation of global histories of localities ought to be at the heart of place-based research, inserted as a necessary exercise in any effort to make place anew."
