Summary
The circular economy holds promises for climate change mitigation and sustainability. However, there are several challenges for integrating the concept of circularity into the context of agricultural sustainability and climate change mitigation and adaptation. We distinguish four major strategies of circular agriculture (CA): narrowing loops, closing loops, slowing down resource use and regenerative practices. From this we developed a conceptual CA framework applicable to mixed farming. We applied the CA framework to the SMART-Farm Tool to identify how well current farm level sustainability assessment methods can capture broader CA effects. The developed conceptual framework helps to determine the contribution of circular farm level activities to sustainability and climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, and can also serve to scan existing agricultural systems for their circularity opportunities.
