Summary

This technical report provides more insight into the spatial diversity in the development of Dutch agriculture and what this means for opportunities to strengthen connections between nature and agriculture. This is a first quantitative exploration of the spatial-economic differences within Dutch agriculture and the prelude to a qualitative follow-up study. The report focuses specifically on what is happening on agricultural land in the Netherlands. The development of the total amount of cultivated land-, and the crop areas and numbers of livestock and how these change, is examined, with particular attention to spatial diversity. The study also investigated regional variations in the economic development of agricultural businesses. Indicators such as the agricultural land price and the standard earning capacity have been explored to understand the dynamics in agricultural land use. Attention is also given to the development of multifunctional agriculture.
