Wemmenhove, Harm; Šebek, Léon

Summary

The Dutch dairy sector aims to reduce methane and ammonia emission with 30% in 2030. Feeding strategies play an important role in achieving this goal. This project monitors the steps that were taken by the participating farmers and feed advisors to reach a reduction of 15-20% and why they were successful in achieving the goal or not. The average TAN - excretion of the participating farms in 2021 was 8.4 kg TAN/1000 kg milk (20% reduction compared to the national average of 2018). This reduction was accomplished by feeding a maximum of 155 g crude protein per kg dry matter. Regarding methane emission, the participating farms had an average of 17.2 kg CH4/1000 kg milk (9.1% reduction compared to the national average of 2018). The (feeding) strategies, experiences and challenges according to the farmers and feed advisors are described in this report.
