Summary

A transition to a more sustainable dairy sector requires collaboration between supply chain actors such as banks, feed companies, processors, and supermarkets. Interviews and surveys with sustainability managers reveal that they are intrinsically motivated and see opportunities in economic-ecological synergies and innovative approaches such as true pricing. However, inconsistent government policies, high regulatory pressure, and narrow profit margins hinder their level of ambition. Successful sustainability efforts require strong internal integration of strategies, supply chain collaboration, and clear policy frameworks. Despite challenges, supply chain actors demonstrate energy to accelerate sustainability through ‘coalitions of the willing.’ These initiatives can not only reduce resistance but also encourage the government to adopt supportive and facilitative policies.
