Summary

Despite the efforts of parties in the supply chain, there is room to improve the well-being of calves at a number of dairy farms. Breeding, management and the organisation of the chain were the three areas in which potential improvements were identified. Dairy farmers and other involved parties sometimes focus too much on the productivity of the cow and, in doing so, lose sight of the well-being of the calf, resulting in the calf being viewed as a by-product. There seems to be a lack of a sense of urgency to change this. The structuring of the Dutch veal industry in relation to the dairy farming industry plays an important role in this regard. Additionally, aspects relating to markets, logistics and governance play a role in influencing the change in behaviour needed to achieve the transition to circular livestock farming.
