Summary

By assessing field values for soil pH at several depths with pH-indicator sticks, additionally to soil- and humus profile description we achieved an indication of the acid buffering from parent material and groundwater. At WENR we developed a method for pH-profile measurement and interpretation, which is described in this report. We compared many field measurements with laboratory analyses of a.o. pH-KCl and pH-H2O. We used soil physical characteristics and estimates of the lowest groundwater table to discern groundwater influence on soil pH in the root zone. We developed a method (‘key’) to classify several pH-profile types based on this information and pH-Field at several depths. We applied this key to 2538 pH-profiles to determine significant differences between units of ecological relevant landscape characteristics and to describe the range of pH-profile types within these units.
