Summary

This report was prepared within the framework of the "Energy Balance for Farm and Chain" initiative from the Public-private partnership (PPP) “Vitale Varkenshouderij”. The primary objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of various combinations of measures for energy production and consumption on pig farms. This was achieved by modelling various aspects, including technical, economic, and environmental effects, for six different combinations of measures: 1) solar panels on the roof, 2) energy storage in a battery, 3) Solar panels and ban cooling system 4) manure digestion with frequent manure removal system (in three variants: A. maximum biogas yield, B. 75% of the maximum biogas yield and C. 505 of the maximum biogas yield), 5) Heat pump (+ boiler) (in twee variants: A. 100% of the heat pump capacity and B. 80% of the heat pump capacity) and 6) heat pump in combination with heat exchangers and heat recovery. Based on the modelling results, the combination of daily removal system of manure and digestion proves to be the most feasible measure regarding technical and environmental aspects (CO2-eq. reduction), despite requiring high investment. Implementing a heat pump in various combinations provides a quick pay-back time, but the CO2-eq. reduction potential remains limited. Based on the results of the model calculations, other measures proved to be both economically and environmentally feasible.
