Summary
At the request of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Wageningen Livestock Research and the Institute for Safety have carried out an inventory of detection systems that can detect fire-hazardous deviations in electrical installations and equipment before the actual fire breaks out, as well as automatic fire extinguishing systems, both for use in technical areas and/or animal houses of intensive livestock farms. An estimate was made of the applicability and effectiveness of these systems in livestock sheds, with the aim of strengthening fire safety and preventing animal suffering. In the absence of hard quantitative data, the estimate of effectiveness is largely based on expert judgement. It has provided an overview of promising preventive detection and automatic fire extinguishing systems that deserve attention in subsequent steps and within an integrated approach.
