Summary

At Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture & Flower Bulbs in Bleiswijk a study with Junebearer strawberries was performed in a greenhouse with ETFE foil in the greenhouse roof. This research was carried out within the program ‘Greenhouse as Energy Source’. The research was mainly aimed at limiting energy and CO2 consumption. The ETFE foil is highly diffuse and has a hight UV-B transmission. The greenhouse has continuous ridge ventilation and 3 screens. The main variety was Elsanta. The electricity consumption for the heat pump was 11.6 kWh/m2 leading to a heat production of 46.4 kWh/m2. The dehumidification process produced a heat surplus of 18.8 kWh/m2 that could be used for heating. In addition, 71.8 kWh/m2 (=8.1 m3/m2) gas was used: a total of 90.6 kWh/m2 was used for greenhouse heating. A total of 8.9 kg/m2 of CO2 was dosed. Elsanta produced a total of 12.0 kg/m2, of which 10.7 kg/m2 Class I. In some periods a higher fruit size would be desirable. Mildew was particular in the spring a problem, which required regular chemical intervention in addition to the use of ‘green’ agents.
