Project

Vital Generation 2040

Introduction

Dutch children currently do not reach the national physical activity recommendations. Especially children from families with a low socio-economic status are at risk. The aim of Vital@2040 (Vital Generation 2040) is to contribute to further development and evaluation of interventions that stimulate physical activity in children, who do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity.

Project description

In a joint and multidisciplinary project, part of the EWUU Alliance (Eindhoven University of Technology, Wageningen University & Research, University Medical Center Utrecht & Utrecht University) and set up by the Vitality Academy, interventions are (re)designed and evaluated at the psychosocial, spatial, institutional and digital level.

At this moment, two research lines are conducted within the Vital@2040-team:

1. ClubVital@2040 – increasing club-organized sports participation by children with low family affluence

2. MobileVital@2040 (mVital@2040) – the role of mobile apps to promote physical activity in the neighborhood

WUR is in charge of the mVital@2040 research line and focusses on investigating the role of mHealth that aims to promote informal physical activity in the neighborhood among youth (10-14 years old), living in low income neighborhoods.

The first objective is to investigate how mHealth interventions that aim to promote informal physical activity among youth (10-14 years old) in low-income neighborhoods can be structurally implemented for youth and intermediaries in the neighborhood setting.

The second objective is to investigate how a mHealth intervention that aims to promote informal physical activity in the neighborhood can be further designed for youth (10-14 years old) living in low income neighborhoods and intermediaries in an engaging way.
