REDD+ in a landscape approach: Addressing drivers, promoting non-carbon benefits
This project has aimed to assess the conditions for successful transformational change of land-use activities through REDD+ implementation. We have paid particular attention to how to address drivers of deforestation and to promote of non-carbon benefits (biodiversity conservation, local socioeconomic development, and governance improvements) in REDD+ actions. Our project has involved multi-scale case studies in Brazil, Ecuador and Mexico, where some of the most advanced experiences in implementing REDD+ with a landscape approach have taken place.
The collaboration between REDD@WUR and the WWF Forest and Climate Programme has aimed to advance scientific knowledge production and utilization on REDD+. It has examined the REDD+ institutional architecture at multiple scales, looking both at the international negotiations process under the UNFCCC and at implementation experiences that have adopted a landscape approach. The focus has been particularly on the promotion of non-carbon benefits and on policy strategies that address the drivers of deforestation and engage in transformational action through REDD+.
