Project
Intermodal Transport of Fresh Products by Train
In this project, reefer containers are improved to enable train transport (such as to China) for more products using 45-foot containers. The focus is on onions, flower bulbs, and bell peppers. The idea is that if a container is good enough to transport demanding flower bulbs to a far-off destination like China, it will also be suitable for all other temperature-sensitive products and possibly other destinations. For comparison, data from 40-foot sea transport reefers is also being collected. Using the collected data, mathematical models are built to analyse decisions about design improvements in the container beforehand, such as whether to apply better insulation or increase circulation.
