Grasping the role of school leaders in enhancing team learning

The current context of education is changing and complex. It requires adjustment and agility of the school organization and also adjustments in the educational offering.

Responding to challenges like increasing equality of opportunity, migration flows, personnel shortages and the movement towards more inclusive education is a demanding task. It demands leadership and a shared willingness to learn by school teams and its leaders. The process in which teams develop mutually shared cognition to increase their performance, is called team learning.

Research shows the school leader has an important role in team learning. Much is already known about what school leaders can do to promote team learning. The goal of the study is twofold: firstly, it aims to explore how school leader-, team- and context characteristics play a role in enhancing team learning in Dutch primary schools and, secondly, how school leaders’ capability in enhancing team learning can be developed.

The central question in my PhD research is

How do school leader-, team- and context characteristics play a role in enhancing team learning in Dutch primary schools?
