Contemplating The Wellbeing Of Low-Income Employees: Salutogenic Approach For Strengthening The Coping Capacity Of Low Income Teachers In Indonesia

This research aims to understand the processes that make honorary teachers in Indonesia able to manage with their adverse conditions in life and face demanding situations at work. As there are honorary teachers who remain indicative of positive health and performance regardless the adversity, it is the general objective of this study to clarify the demands, resources, and health-promoting processes at the workplace that allow these honorary teachers to do well.

Being engaged to a minimum-wage job with demanding working conditions, insufficient resources and least workplace support is detrimental to workplace wellbeing. This situation is faced by honorary teachers in Indonesia, which makes them struggle with poor financial circumstances and challenging life situations. They are vulnerable and prone to stress and health issues.

It is a depressing reality that many honorary teachers in Indonesia suffer from the disadvantages from work and living struggles. Nevertheless, not all of them plummet into problematic conditions due to these difficulties. Despite the challenging situations, many honorary teachers are indicative of positive health with also satisfactory performance and persona growth at the workplace. This research aims to understand the processes that are essential to build a strong sense of coherence, including the intertwine of resources and demands that determine the workplace wellbeing of honorary teachers in Indonesia. The study will use a salutogenic and socio-ecologic perspective, with a mixed-method cross-sectional design to explore resources, demands, and health-promoting processes at different levels of honorary teachers’ life dimensions. The Job Demands-Resources Health-SoC model will be employed as the fundamental framework to comprehend the intertwine of all processes that contribute to Indonesian honorary teachers’ workplace wellbeing.
