Q (Qin) Li MSc
Promovendus, Externe medewerkerHi, I'm Qin, a biobased film maker. I am dedicated to incorporating plasticizers to develop more flexible and less water-sensitive food packaging films. I hold a BSc in Food Science and Engineering and an MSc in Processing and Storage of Agricultural Products. In January 2023, I embarked on my journey at Wageningen University, where I began exploring biopolymer coacervate-based films.
What is a biopolymer coacervate?
Biopolymer coacervates are associated with liquid-liquid phase separation, forming a biopolymer-rich phase at the bottom. These dense structures have attracted significant interest due to their high concentration and their ability to form spontaneously from aqueous mixtures.
What is my project about?
My research focuses on identifying effective plasticizers that can soften and hydrophobize biopolymer coacervate-based films. A key priority of my project is investigating the mechanical and barrier properties—such as water vapor and oxygen permeability—of plasticized films. To address the brittleness and water-sensitivity issue, our strategy involves creating highly concentrated biopolymer coacervates and using various plasticizers to enhance their flexibility and hydrophobicity.
How can you collaborate with me?
There is a profound philosophy behind the selection of plasticizers and the plasticization mechanisms of biobased films. If you are a hands-on individual eager to explore the endless possibilities of plasticizers in the lab, you are highly welcome—you will have the freedom to design your own experiments. If you are more interested in understanding the underlying plasticization mechanisms, you will also be welcome and have access to state-of-the-art techniques and professional expertise within our group.
