Merel Laauwen is a PhD candidate in the Public Administration & Policy Group and the Environmental Policy Group. Her research focuses on water scarcity governance and managing the potential risks associated with future Day Zero events in urban contexts. Before coming to Wageningen, she worked as an independent consultant on projects related to the monitoring and evaluation of water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives globally. She holds a BSc in Environmental and Climate Sciences (Honors) from Amsterdam University College and an MSc in Water Science, Policy, and Management from the University of Oxford. Merel was awarded the Hubert Student Award for graduating at the top of her MSc cohort, as well as the Water Conservators' Company Dissertation Prize for her research on "Rural Water Treatment Barriers and Opportunities: An Implementation Science Analysis of Chlorine and UV-C LED Disinfection in Small Water Supplies".
