Veni project: "Clean water for all: optimal solutions for reducing multiple pollutants in rivers" (funded by NWO; 2019-2023). In this project, Maryna produces new knowledge on interactions between multiple pollutants and their causes in order to identify optimal solutions for reducing future river export of multiple pollutants simultaneously. Maryna does this in three steps. First, she analyses interactions between river pollutants. For this, she develops a global multi-pollutant model by extending my previously designed MARINA nutrient model to the world, and to a broader set of pollutants. Second, she analyses causes of multi-pollutant problems in severely polluted regions (hotspots) using the model of Step 1. For future years, she develops new scenarios taking into account societal trends such as economic and population growth, and climate change. Third, she links the model of Step 1 with a spatial optimisation method to identify optimal sets of mitigation options to reduce future river export of multiple pollutants simultaneously in selected hotspots from Step 2. Her research is novel in combining biogeochemical and biophysical substance flow analysis with a spatial economic optimisation analysis for multiple pollutants. This combination allows to identify optimal solutions for multi-pollutant problems in rivers and their sub-basins worldwide. Maryna's research can help to prioritize future research and serve as a basis to co-design, with model users, optimal solutions for pollution hotspots.
