My "Biobased Solutions (BIoSolutions Team)" team aims to produce more sustainable and greener processes and materials.

We work on converting biomass, using the 12 principles of green chemistry, into nanomaterials such as nanocellulose and nanolignin. Currently, we are exploring a method called "one-pot" treatment, where the idea is to remove lignin and modify the surface of cellulose to enhance the colloidal properties of nano-fibrillated cellulose materials.

Nevertheless, both nanocellulose and nanolignin present great potential for building environments, water treatment, medical, and packaging applications. We study how to tune our nanomaterials for high-performance structures using self-assembly and entanglement in different forms (1D, 2D, and 3D). Biobased composites are also being explored. For instance, nanocellulose is being incorporated into another biobased system (ex., oyster shell and alginate) to produce 3D printed materials for the building environment.
