I was trained as a social and economic historian at Leiden University, where I completed both my BA (cum laude) and ResMA (cum laude). During my ResMA I mainly focused on political economy, economic development and social change in East and Southeast Asia, and wrote my thesis on the development of the capitalist system in China. After graduation I decided to pursue a BA (summa cum laude) in philosophy at the KU Leuven, where I specialized in political philosophy, writing a thesis on the ethics of corporate lobby from a democratic perspective.

I am currently working at the Economic and Environmental History Group as a PhD candidate in Economics, doing comparative historical research on the development of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Southeast Asia under the guidance of Ewout Frankema, Pim de Zwart and Sandra de Pleijt. My research is part of the project 'South-South Divergence. Comparative Histories of Regional Integration in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa since 1850'.
