My background is in theoretical biology, and I have specialized in the analysis and modelling of the evolution, epidemiology and ecology of infectious diseases. At Wageningen University, I work on diseases that move between wildlife, livestock and humans.

Before joining Wageningen University, I spent 10 years in Oslo, Norway, where I studied the ecology, spillover and epidemiology of the plague in both historical and modern contexts. Prior to plague, I modelled sexual contact networks to evaluate interventions against chlamydia at the Dutch Institute for Public Health and the Environment, and investigated how HIV-1 adapted to the human population following its initial spillover from wildlife at Utrecht University.
