If you’re working with Mendeley, we advise you to upgrade to the new Mendeley Reference Manager. You'll also need to install the Mendeley Cite add-in to Word.

You may recall that a few months ago we advised against upgrading Mendeley. The Word add-in was not yet compatible with the Office Word license from WUR. This has since been corrected. We now recommend you upgrade from Mendeley Desktop to Mendeley Reference Manager software.

Why should you upgrade?

Mendeley has released a new version of their reference manager software. It has an improved interface and new features, such as a notebook to annotate PDFs or the Mendeley Web Importer to add articles to your library while browsing the web. The library is also now cloud-based, so you can work from any computer even if your library is not installed on that specific computer. It is also now possible to work from an online version of Word.

Finally, Mendeley Desktop is no longer maintained and is no longer available for download. But, you may still work with your already installed version.

How to upgrade from Mendeley Desktop to Mendeley Reference Manager?

  1. Sync your Mendeley Desktop library.
  2. Download Mendeley Reference Manager.
  3. Do not use “sign in via your institution”. Sign in with your own account instead (the same account as you used for your Mendeley Desktop library).
  4. The library will automatically sync.
  5. Do not forget to install the add-in Mendeley Cite.

    1. Open a Word document and choose ‘Get Add-ins’ from the Insert tab in the top ribbon.
    2. Click on ‘Admin managed’ and select Mendeley Cite. Click on “add”.
    3. Mendeley cite is now installed. You will find it in the top ribbon in the “references” tab.
    4. If you need more help installing Mendeley Cite, you can consult the WUR IT Knowledge Base.
  6. If you’re currently working in documents with the previous Cite plug-in from Mendeley Desktop, you should convert them to the new add-in. You’ll get a pop up window to prompt you to do so. Note that once converted, you cannot restore your document to its pre-converted version. As such, we recommend backing up your documents before converting them to the new version.
  7. You can also access your synced library online. Log in with your own account.
