Soil, LIVE!

Soils host an extremely high diversity of species and have frequently been described as “the poor man’s tropical rainforest”. Soil scientists have made great advances in unraveling who these belowground inhabitants are and their crucial role in transitioning to biodiversity-positive food systems. Yet, the general public remains unaware of this role and the overall beauty of soil life.

Through the wildcard project ‘Soil, LIVE!’, Remco de Kluizenaar (independent sound-artist & composer) together with Marie Zwetsloot & Giulia Bongiorno (WUR Soil Biology group) aim to bring awareness, enthusiasm and care for soil life to a wide audience giving soil biodiversity a voice.

This unique collaboration between soil science, music and art will give life to a poetical storyline about soil biodiversity introducing a musical composition that will be co-created with and performed by the Wageningen Harmonic Orchestra at the 10th anniversary of the Bodemdierendagen in October 2024. In the same period, the artist will create a sound art installation for the Dutch Design Week.

The motivation for this collaboration between art and science is that music can trigger an emotional engagement of the audience with soil and its inhabitants in a way that scientific knowledge by itself cannot. Stay tuned and don’t miss the next update from the project!
