Soil has no borders, and neither should soil policy

No healthy society without healthy, biodiverse soil. But how do you translate that into effective policy? This year, the European Union will introduce the first international law to protect soil health. In Science, a group of scientists led by Wim van der Putten (NIOO-KNAW/WUR) lists the challenges.
 

 

The EU's goal is for the soil to be healthy throughout Europe by 2050. Later this year, therefore, the European Soil Health Law will be rolled out. It must become a binding law, based on the principle that healthy soil can fulfill a variety of functions. Consider, for example, protection against diseases or helping to combat climate change.
