Mid-April, Sensory Science and Eating Behaviour Group member Sanne Boesveldt visited sunny Florida for the annual conference of the Association for Chemoreception Sciences, aka AChemS. The conference attracted ~400 participants from across the globe, all interested in the most fascinating of the senses: Smell and Taste. Clearly, these are crucial drivers for the pleasure derived from food and drinks, which was an important part of the meeting.

Sanne was invited to give a talk within the symposium CHEMOSENSORY PERCEPTION AND EATING BEHAVIOR: FROM INBORN VARIATION THROUGH GUT-BRAIN CIRCUIT TO COVID-19, that was hosted by Danielle Reed (Monell Chemical Senses Center) and Joanne Cole (University of Colorado), entitled SAVOR THE FLAVOR: WHEN COVID-19 SILENCES THE PALATE, on the impact of covid-related smell and taste loss on eating behavior. Besides this symposium, other interesting talks and posters focused on  the seminal work by Anthony Sclafani on appetition (processes that promote ingestive behaviors, a symposium on how OLFACTION AND TASTE can be used as BIOMARKERS FOR HEALTH (e.g. in cancer patients with chemotherapy, or neurodegenerative disorders), and an interesting and lively debate on the role of AI for sensory research. Per usual, the conference closed off with a brilliant dance party!
