Prof. Art Dewulf speaks at the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development
In the Voluntary National Review Lab on "Bridging Gaps and Forging Partnerships to Enhance Reporting on SDGs in Africa" at the High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development, Prof. Art Dewulf shared insights from his project on "Governing SDG interactions in East Africa".
Organised by the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) of the African Union, the Office of Special Adviser on Africa, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa at the UN Headquarters in New York, this VNR Lab focused on current gaps of SDGs evaluation in Africa and challenges pertinent to the environmental sustainability, climate, energy, and water systems nexus. It also analysed progress made by African countries towards SDG 6 Water and SDG 7 Energy and the significance of continental and global partnerships to enhance progress towards the latter goals.
In his talk, Prof. Art Dewulf emphasized the importance of analyzing and addressing the multitude of synergies and trade-offs between investments in SDGs. In the research project on "Governing SDG interactions in East-Africa", an international consortium aims to identify mechanisms of alignment between development actors and efforts, such that trade-offs can be minimed and synergies maximized. This is done through analyzing case studies on landscape restoration in Ethiopia, climate-smart livestock in Kenya, and the water-energy-food nexus in Uganda.
