In Memoriam Cees Karssen
We have received the sad news that former Rector Magnificus Cees Karssen has died at the age of 86.
Cees Karssen started his career at Wageningen University in 1969 as a teacher of plant physiology and became a professor in 1986. His research focused on the physiology of seeds, hormonal regulation of germination, and seed technology. His research was internationally acclaimed.
One of Professor Karssen’s excellent characteristics was his ability to operate in important situations in such a manner that changes within the organisation interfered as little as possible with employees. This was particularly clear during his tenure as Rector Magnificus from 1993 to 2000. He stood at the inception of the collaboration with the DLO agricultural research institutes, which ultimately led to the formation of the present organisation, Wageningen University & Research. This was one of his managerial highlights.
His leading role in developing the Wageningen Graduate Schools will always be remembered, together with his important contribution to the internationalisation of our organisation.
We wish his family and friends strength in coming to terms with their loss.
