Ernst van den Ende appointed Managing Director Animal Sciences Group
The Executive Board of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) has appointed Ernst van den Ende as the Managing Director of the Animal Sciences Group (ASG) as of 1 January 2022. This appointment is in line with WUR's policy on talent and mobility within the organisation. Van den Ende is currently Managing Director of Plant Sciences Group (PSG).
The Executive Board is pleased that Ernst van den Ende will take on this position within ASG to further work on the major transitions that WUR contributes to with its research and education. Worldwide, we are faced with an enormous challenge to feed the growing world population and at the same time ensure the careful management, use, and protection of nature and the environment. In addition to a transition in agriculture, this also requires transitions in energy and food for the sustainable use of the North Sea.
"The transfer from PSG to ASG is a unique opportunity to further contribute to the sustainable future of agro-food systems worldwide," says Van den Ende. "The work of the many researchers within ASG is essential for integrated and long-term vision, which offers a sustainable perspective for agriculture and fisheries, nature, economy, and society. It is inspiring and motivating to be able to contribute to this challenge with partners inside and outside WUR. I have greatly enjoyed working in the plant sector and am proud of the contributions made here to the transitions for sustainable agriculture and horticulture. I will now use this experience within ASG for research and education aimed at solutions for sustainable and profitable livestock farming and the health and welfare of animals and people".
Ernst van den Ende (58) studied Plant Pathology at Wageningen University and obtained his doctorate in 1992 from the Phytopathology Group. He initially worked as a researcher at various testing stations (fruit, bulbs, and tree nursery) and, since the establishment of the Praktijkonderzoek Plant & Omgeving (Plant and Environment Practical Research), in various managerial roles. Van den Ende has been managing director of Plant Sciences Group since 2009 and is a member of the WUR Executive Council.
Petra Caessens, Director of Operations, is contact person for PSG until a new managing director is appointed.
