Can grazing cows tackle climate change?
Corina van Middelaar discusses in a Dutch podcast of studio Plantaardig the recently published article 'Risk to rely on soil carbon sequestration to offset global ruminant emissions', based on PhD work of Yue Wang
In the podcast Corina explains how carbon sequestration has been proposed as an important means to offset greenhouse gas emissions from ruminant systems. At the global and regional levels farmed ruminants emit more greenhouse gases than the grasslands in these systems could ever sequester. The researchers use a climate model to account for the difference between the global warming effects of methane emissions and CO2.
In conclusion, it will be a big challenge to get to climate neutral animal production
