Summary

This PhD thesis assesses the potential of circularity and the protein transition on both European and global scales to reduce environmental impacts such as land use, greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient losses. An optimization modelling approach was employed to explore the effects of these food system solutions on diets, crop and animal production systems, and changes in organic waste streams. The findings show that reallocating biomass streams within the food system and altering diets can significantly reduce the environmental impact of regional and global food systems. The results of this research aim to enhance understanding of which food system strategies can help provide healthy diets while reducing the environmental impacts of the food system.
