European high school students join the Global Challenge
High school students throughout Europe participated in the kick-off workshop of the Global Challenge organized by Wageningen Youth Institute and SLU Youth institute on December 14. This workshop explained what the Global Challenge is all about and how students can write one. Special guest Evi Vet, UN Youth representative biodiversity and food, talked about the topics she deals with when working with the United Nations, inspiring students with subjects for their global challenge report.
About the workshop
Wageningen Youth Institute coordinator, Mirjam Troost, described the framework of the Global Challenge of the World Food Prize Foundation, in which students will write a short report about a global challenge of their interest, supported by university students. Marloes Ruiter and Dennis Vlegels, former participants of the Wageningen Youth Institute, explained to students how to write their Global Challenge report in a mini-lecture. After handing in the Global Challenge report, the high school students will interact in online round table sessions with fellow students and experts, such as World Food Prize laureates and University professors. At this event, students will be selected to join the Global Youth Institute in October 2021 in Des Moines, US.
United Nations youth representative shares her work
Evi Vet, UN Youth representative Biodiversity and Food, made a special appearance and talked about why she became a youth representative and what her current affairs are. “Our food production depends a lot on biodiversity. The role of bees and the effect of their decline is only one example of why biodiversity and food are intertwined.”, says Evi, explaining the importance of biodiversity for food production. “We as the youth are such a big part of the world. In 30 years, we will be the ones making decisions and thinking about the challenges we are facing.” Being the only youth representative of biodiversity and food in the world, she explains the key role of the youth and encourages the students to lobby for more youth representatives.
