5 Tips to help you learn a language

Are you busy with or planning on learning a new language? Tackle it smartly with these 5 tips from our experts.

Tip 1: Dare to make mistakes

The most important thing when learning a language is to use it as much as possible. Even, or actually especially, if you are still uncertain about it. By making mistakes and actively using the language, you will become increasingly proficient. Practice makes perfect!

Do you find it nerve-wracking to talk in a language you don't yet speak very well? During our language courses, we create a safe environment in which you can practice to the full. For example, by doing assignments in pairs and small groups, in which you will simulate real-life situations. By collaborating with others, you will talk more and be able to exchange knowledge and learn from each other.

Tip 2: Always learn words within a logical context

If you are learning a word within a certain context, your brain will make a link between the word to be learned and the context. This can be done, for example, by working with images accompanying the word or by placing the word in a sentence. That way, you can better understand and remember new words. The context will help you to remember the word and its meaning.

Tip 3: What you discover yourself, you remember better

Acquiring a language also involves learning and mastering grammatical constructs. Of course, we have teachers at In'to who will help you understand and discover all those constructs. But, what certainly works well in addition, is to observe for yourself the grammar in simple texts within the context in which it is used. In this way, little by little, you will discover how the language works and be able to deduce many grammatical rules. Self-discovery helps you to make connections and remember rules more easily.

Tip 4: Focus on what you already understand

Don't be put off by the words you don't yet know. Native speakers talk at their own (sometimes fast) pace and an article in, say, a Spanish newspaper may contain a lot of words and sentence structures that you may not yet be familiar with. The trick is to focus on what you already do recognise and understand. You will find that you already understand and can infer more than you might have thought.

Tip 5: Immerse yourself as much as possible

If you are learning a language, make sure that you interact with it as much as possible. Is that tricky if you want to learn French in the Netherlands? Well, you can still immerse yourself. Watch a French series, practise with Duolingo, listen to French-language music or change your email settings to French, for example!
