SG - Reimagining the Future: Beyond the Sci-Fi Escape
Forget escaping to Mars—what if the future lies right here on Earth? Join visual artist Richard Kofi and DJ Chinnamasta for a thrilling fusion of art, music, and speculative thought that challenges post-apocalyptic narratives and imagines creative possibilities for our planet's future.
About Reimagining the Future: Beyond the Sci-Fi Escape
While popular science fiction often tantalises us with the idea of hope after the end—whether through an escape to Mars or a journey to another galaxy—what alternative visions exist for a future, here on Earth? Join visual artist Richard Kofi and DJ Chinnamasta as they challenge the dominant narratives of post-apocalyptic survival!
Through a fusion of art, music, and speculative thought, this event will explore new ways of imagining a future grounded in our planet. Instead of fleeing to distant worlds, what creative possibilities can we envision for continuing life on Earth, even in the face of its potential end? Prepare to expand your perspective and engage with innovative ideas that resist the escapism of traditional sci-fi and instead offer hope for a sustainable future right here at home.
Don’t forget to put on your dancing shoes!
About series The Talk Show at the End of the World
What better way to start the academic year than with the end of the world! We live in times of turmoil; catastrophic climate change, the collapse of human civilisations, and the threat of nuclear annihilation are but a few omens of an apocalypse. But the end of the world is notoriously difficult to wrap your head around - until it happens of course. But then it’s already too late. Join The Talk Show at the End of the World and find (dis)comfort in the talks we’ll be having with a wide variety of guests.
About Richard Kofi
Richard Kofi (1988, Wageningen) is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, and programmer at the International Theatre Amsterdam, deeply committed to unravelling colonial histories and envisioning future possibilities. His work, spanning drawings, films, and collages, weaves together the threads of the present, past, and future, while bridging visible and invisible realms. Kofi, alongside his partner, choreographer Junadry Leocaria, delves into the rich material and immaterial heritage of West African, Afro-Dutch, and Caribbean cultures. Together, they explore how narratives interweave, ebbing and flowing like tides, shaping our collective identity.
A key aspect of Kofi's artistic practice is his involvement in podcasting and public programming. Collaborating with Simone Zeefuik and La Fam Productions, he co-creates the podcast Project Wiaspora, which serves as a platform for exploring the intersections of history, theory, and personal narratives. Through this medium, Kofi strives to foster a deeper understanding of our shared heritage and inspire a more just and liberated future.
Kofi's most recent endeavour is the creation of the Museum of Black Futures.
