Funding and WIAS Fellowships

Visiting scientist fellowship 

Deadline: 17 January 2025

These grants are meant to give staff members the chance to invite external researchers to spend a few months at a WIAS chair group. This grant covers living expenses up to €1000 per month and travel costs to and from Wageningen and will be administered via the chair group of the staff member.

Conditions: 

  • Financial support for a stay of up to 6 months starting in 2025
  • Budget meant to cover the costs of travel to and from Wageningen (one round trip) and living expenses
  • Not meant for extending stay of WIAS PhD candidates
  • The visiting scientist should contribute to the research of the hosting chair group
  • The visiting scientist should actively contribute to WIAS (e.g. giving PhD course, seminars, lecture, etc.)
  • Within 4 weeks after the visit, a short evaluation (1/2 A4) is sent to WIAS

Selection is based upon: 

  • Quality of the researcher
  • Envisaged contribution to WIAS and the scientific community of Wageningen University
  • Expectations on establishing international networks or long-term work relations


All WIAS staff members may apply for a Visiting Scientist fellowship by submitting the application form and supporting documents. 

PhD travel fellowship

This grant allows PhD candidates to visit a research institute/university abroad to perform research. This grant covers expenses related to housing and travel (from and to Wageningen) up to €1000 per month (maximum €3500). The fellowship will be administered via the chair group of the PhD candidate.

Conditions:

  • Financial support for a stay of up to 4 months to perform research at a research institute or university abroad in 2025
  • Budget meant to cover the costs of travel from and to Wageningen (one round trip) and housing
  • Approved WIAS research proposal and first TSP
  • Clear added value to the research project of the PhD candidate. The visit should be an extra activity that is initiated by the PhD candidate, not an integral part of the original project as described in the project proposal. Fieldwork or other research that is already covered in the original PhD project is not eligible for this grant.
  • Written confirmation of host institute before reimbursement
  • PhD candidates can only receive this fellowship once
  • Within 4 weeks after the visit, a short evaluation (1/2 A4) should be sent to WIAS

All WIAS PhD candidates may apply for a PhD travel fellowship by submitting the application form and supporting documents. 

Postdoc grant proposal writing fellowship

Deadline: 17 January 2025

This grant gives postdocs the opportunity to spend 3 months on writing a grant proposal that primarily contributes to the scientific career of the candidate (such as NWO-Veni proposal).

The grant consists of 3 months’ salary with payment of overhead and is transferred to the chair group after proposal submission.

Conditions:

  • The activity should start in 2025
  • Graduation less than six years ago
  • Approval of Chair holder
  • Mention the funding source and application deadline
  • The fellowship may not be used as an extension of a PhD project
  • Postdocs can only receive this fellowship once
  • A copy of the completed grant proposal is sent to WIAS
  • The grant proposal must be submitted to a suitable organisation (such as NWO) and WIAS should be informed about the outcome of the selection procedure (approved or not).

  • Quality of the candidate
  • Quality of the proposal

The call for proposals TKI Graduate School Green Top Sectors 2024 is now open.

Who can apply?

This call is aimed at MSc students who have written their own PhD project. Staff members of the graduate schools EPS, PE&RC, WIAS, VLAG, WIMEK and WASS can apply as main applicant. The research subject must fit within the research missions of the Knowledge and Innovation Agendas of the top sectors indicated in the call text.
