Student testimonial
Bjorn Beelen – BSc & MSc Biotechnology
In my master I have joined the Process technology track even though I am also focusing on the Environmental side of Biotechnology. I have done my thesis at Environmental Technology (ETE) chair group and now I am doing an internship in wastewater management, which is the perfect combination of my interests since it involves both the environmental side and the process engineering side.
Why did you choose Biotechnology?
When I was in high school, I was looking for a programme that would be a combination of biology but also chemistry and also some mathematics and therefore I started the Bachelor in Biotechnology here in Wageningen. And during my bachelor, I really enjoyed some courses like Analytical methods in organic Chemistry, so that I also continued with the same Master in Biotechnology.
Which part of your studies have you found to be the most interesting?
I think what has been most interesting is that there are different aspects you can learn during the master. Some courses focus more on modelling, some more on chemistry or fundamental knowledge. Some other courses have more group work in which you really learn how to behave in a group and also understand the social aspects. I like the combination of different types of courses and therefore different challenges.
What do you think about the student life?
I have been living here for almost five years now. And even though it is not a big city, there many students and people. And I think that is quite easy to connect with people but at the same time it is a relaxed environment. I have also done a board year in Codon, the Biotechnology study association. I used to be the study Commissioner and I was involved in tasks related to the study program, such as what could be improved in the study programme and what students think about the courses. It has been a nice experience because you can become closer to teachers and really try to improve courses for next students.
