Erasmus+ Green Travel Support
The Erasmus+ programme provides green travel support to encourage sustainable travel. You will receive green travel support if environmentally friendly means of transport are used for both the journey to and from the host country.
FOR MOBILITIES IN 2025-2026 (or with an end date after July 2025)
Starting this year, travel support is included in the Erasmus+ grant. If you travel green both to and from your receiving institution, you will receive a higher amount of travel support. Additionally, you will receive two extra days of grant to cover your travel days.
Eligible transport options include train, bus, bike and carpooling (but only when traveling with other students—not with family members for vacation purposes before or after your stay abroad). Submit corresponding proof and you will receive a set amount based on the distance between Wageningen University and your receiving institution.
In order to calculate the amount of travel support, we use the European Commission's distance calculator to calculate the distance band. Other sources are not accepted.
Please have a look at our travel support page for an overview of the green travel support amounts.
How to apply for green travel support
When filling in your Erasmus+ grant application in Osiris Student, you are asked to indicate the way you are planning to travel to and from your exchange destination. If selecting one of the green travel options, you will need to confirm that you are planning to travel green, by checking the box "I declare on my honour that I will travel sustainably to and from my host institution as part of my planned Erasmus+ exchange".
When you have returned from your exchange, you will be able to upload proof of your travels as part of the upon return process. You will need to upload your train or bus tickets (both ways!). In case of carpooling, we need, for example, a copy of the gas receipts. Note that you will only receive green travel support if you traveled green both ways.
The green travel support will be included in the total grant amount on your Grant Agreement. You will receive 70% of the amount at the start, and the remaining 30% at the end of your exchange. If you ended up not traveling green, we will recalculate your travel support.
FOR MOBILITIES IN 2024-2025
WUR students receiving an Erasmus+ grant can receive a green travel top-up if they use environmentally friendly, sustainable means of transport for their trip to AND from their host country. This includes travel by train, bus or carpooling (but only if travelling with other students, not with family members for vacation purposes before or after your stay abroad).
Submit corresponding proof and you will receive a single contribution of EUR 50, plus 2 additional days of Erasmus+ grant to cover your travel days.
How to apply for the green travel top-up
When filling in your Erasmus+ grant application in Osiris Student, you are asked to indicate the way you are planning to travel to and from your exchange destination. If selecting one of the green travel options, you will need to confirm that you are planning to travel green, by checking the box "I declare on my honour that I will travel sustainably to and from my host institution as part of my planned Erasmus+ exchange".
After you have returned from your exchange, you will be able to upload proof of your travels as part of the upon return process. You will need to upload your train or bus tickets (both ways!). In case of carpooling, we need a copy of the gas receipts. Note that you will only receive the green travel top-up if you traveled green both ways.
The green travel top-up will be included in the total grant amount on your Grant Agreement at the start of your exchange. However, if approved, the top-up will be paid together with the second payment of your Erasmus+ grant.
Please note: starting September 2024, we have switched to processing Erasmus+ grant applications in Osiris. If you have applied for the Erasmus+ grant before September, by sending all documents via email, please fill in and sign the Declaration of Honour. Send the signed Declaration of Honour plus proof of your green travel (both ways!) to studentexchange@wur.nl, instead of uploading the documents in Osiris.
