Internship

Master internship in Natural Toxins team of Wageningen Food Safety Research

Are you passionate about addressing the global challenge of providing safe and nutritious food to everyone? Are you eager to improve analytical techniques in this field using cutting-edge measurement systems like LC-(HR)MS? If so, this could be the perfect opportunity for you!

Topic of research

Development of an LC–MS-based method for the analysis of hydroxyanthracene derivatives (HADs) in food supplements and plant materials

Natural Toxins team

The Natural Toxins team of WFSR hosts the European Reference Laboratory (EURL) for Mycotoxins and Plant Toxins in food and feed, is seeking a motivated student to join their team. As an ambitious and enthusiastic individual, you will have the chance to contribute to this critical area of research and make a meaningful impact on the food safety and industry.

Project background

Several ingredients found in food and food supplements are derived from plants containing hydroxyanthracene derivatives (HADs), including rhubarb, cassia, and aloe. Specific HADs, such as aloin A, B, aloe emodin, emodin and danthron, are prohibited in food supplements. To enhance product safety, EU Regulation 2021/468 imposes stricter controls on HAD levels.

What will you do?

  • Literature search on the topic
  • Instrumental method optimization (LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS)
  • Investigation into sample preparation options (extraction/cleanup)
  • Validation of the developed method(s)
  • Data processing and data evaluation
  • Application of the method by analysis of samples
  • Dissemination of results (presentation/poster in conferences and report)

Requirements

  • General knowledge in analytical chemistry and laboratory techniques (LC-MS)
  • Interest in mycotoxin and/or plant toxin analysis is preferred
  • Enthusiastic, research-oriented student
  • Availability for approx. six months (full time, onsite), starting from September/Q4 2024
  • Communication skills in English, knowledge of Dutch is a pro
  • Bachelor's degree in analytical chemistry or a related field

What will you learn/achieve

  • You will acquire knowledge base regarding natural toxins, toxicology and corresponding regulations
  • Broaden your analytical expertise
  • To work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in laboratory work
  • Conduct literature reviews and data analysis
  • Perform laboratory experiments to detect and quantify myco and plant toxins in food samples
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the research team and communicate results effectively
  • Prepare and present scientific reports and presentations
