World Café on SIDS challenges

The 1,5 hour session aims to empower SIDS and foster meaningful partnerships between local and international stakeholders and identify sustainable solutions to address their unique challenges. By actively engaging in these discussions, you can contribute your insights and experiences to collectively develop strategies and solutions that meet the specific needs and aspirations of SIDS. The session will open with a keynote of Oriana Wouters, a young climate justice leader and policy officer at Department of Nature and Environment in Aruba . A key note of deputy minister Climate Change and Sustainability - Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Republic and Board Member at Green Climate Fund is to be confirmed

During this event, participants will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and knowledge sharing on the 3 critical topics Salinisation, Fresh Water, Food Production & Food Security (see descriptions below).Facilitated by experts and representatives from WUR these group conversations will allow for diverse perspectives, experiences, and expertise to shape the discussions.

A wrap-up and final reflections will be given by Jaime de Bourbon de Parme, Climate Envoy of the Netherlands.

Salinisation

Poses significant threats to freshwater availability and agricultural productivity in SIDS. Through open and inclusive dialogue, attendees will explore the specific challenges posed by soil salinisation, its impacts on communities and ecosystems, and innovative approaches to enhance resilience and adaptability.

Fresh Water

Focusses on the urgent need for sustainable freshwater management in SIDS. Participants will discuss the unique water challenges , such as water scarcity, pollution, and rising sea levels. Together, they will explore strategies for integrated water resource management, nature-based solutions, and resilient infrastructure to ensure equitable access to clean water and enhance water security.

Food Production and Security

Here participants will exchange ideas on building sustainable agricultural systems, promoting local food production, and ensuring food security in the face of climate change impacts. Through dialogue and shared experiences, we will explore innovative approaches to enhance productivity, resilience, and food sovereignty in SIDS.
