About Introducing Degrowth
Crelis Rammelt opens the series by introducing degrowth and setting the stage for the following evenings. The degrowth movement offers a radical critique of a growth-based paradigm. What alternatives become possible once we move away from measuring success through GDP? Degrowth draws from political ecology, ecological economics, eco-Marxism, feminist theory and post-development. Crelis will bring together these intellectual insights to confront us with our own biases concerning growth, limits, money, and quality of life.
About Crelis Rammelt
Dr. Crelis Rammelt is an assistant professor at the University of Amsterdam. He works in the field of environmental geography and development studies at the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. His research and teaching are aimed at establishing links between disciplines, mainly in the fields of political ecology, post-development, degrowth and systems science. He is the course coordinator for the course “Degrowth” at UvA which focuses on economic growth entwined with the social, environmental and financial turmoil. Crelis has also been involved in founding the Dutch degrowth platform Ontgroei and leads an action research and social justice program with development organisations in Bangladesh.
