Salt intrusion and adaptation in the south-central coastal zones of Bangladesh under changing climate
Summary
Bangladesh is blessed with numerous islands along the Bay of Bengal. Climate-induced changes, such as rising sea levels and shifts in water balance, affect the agroecosystems of this region through saltwater intrusion. Furthermore, elevated temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, and increased carbon dioxide levels also impact agricultural productivity. However, our current understanding is limited regarding how these impacts will unfold in the future. This research uses advanced modeling techniques to assess the effects of climate change and salinity intrusion on agriculture in the south-central coastal districts of Bangladesh. Location-specific potential solutions were identified by synthesizing farmers' experiences, existing literature, and model-driven insights. The findings from this thesis will contribute to the development of sustainable agricultural production in the south-central coastal area of Bangladesh.
