Summary

Some C3 plants, despite lacking the C4 carbon concentration mechanism, assimilate carbon dioxide at a very high rate, especially when grown under high irradiance—higher than often recorded for C4 plants. Several possible physiological mechanisms contributing to the high photosynthetic rates of these exceptional C3 plants have been studied.
