Course
Philosophy of Social Science - 3 ECTS
The course consists of 6 sessions in which various themes and issues in the philosophy of the social sciences will be analysed and discussed. Participants are expected to read the literature for each session beforehand. In turns participants are also expected to prepare sessions (except the first session) by identifying ambiguities and difficulties in the texts and raising questions for discussion. In addition, participants are asked to answer questions and fulfil small tasks prepared by the lecturer, which intend to link up the discussed materials with social science research in general or the particular research projects of the PhD candidates.
The course will be completed by the writing of a (5-page) paper, in which (part of) the content of the course will be brought to bear on the problems and dilemmas to which participants are confronted in their respective PhD projects. One possible format is a ‘duo-paper’, in which two participants mutually interrogate each other’s research projects in the light of the themes and issues discussed in the course (in that case, the size of the paper has to be 8 pages).
