Embracing complexity: unraveling mechanism in health promotion in the Healthy Futures Nearby programme
Summary
This PhD research is part of and an addition to the overall evaluation of the Healthy Futures Nearby programme, which aimed at reducing health inequalities - specifically concerning families experiencing vulnerability - by participatory approaches and adjusted professional health promoting practices. It combined in-depth research methodologies such as case studies with overall explorations of effectiveness among 46 projects. Findings implicate that participation in health promotion can trigger a range of responses among family members, of which many evolve around ‘making a contribution to the project or society’ and ‘peer support from other families’. Moreover, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach for engagement of families. Tailored professional practices were one of the key elements contributing to positive changes among families. Concerning effectiveness, an approach combining multiple strategies might be successful. Moreover, a thorough preparation together with stakeholders of any health promotion approach under study is very valuable.
