Currently, as Strategic Advisor in Plant Sciences, Dr. ir. Marleen Riemens is responsible for translating societal and scientific developments into research programming and research policy.
Since 2003, Marleen Riemens has been affiliated with Wageningen University and Research. Initially, as a junior and senior researcher in the Agroecology group, and from 2016 to 2023 as the team leader of the Crop Health group with a focus on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in open cultivation. Marleen specializes in sustainable plant production systems, specifically in the development of resilient cultivation systems. She studied Plant Breeding and Crop Protection (MSc) and obtained her PhD in Crop and Weed Ecology from Wageningen University in 2009. She is one of the editors of the scientific journal Weed Research. Her main interests and publications are in the field of crop protection, redesign of sustainable cultivation systems, and the reduction of harmful effects of cultivation on the environment and biodiversity. Marleen has led various national and European projects in the area of integrated control of diseases, pests, and weeds, side effects of pesticides on non-target organisms, and monitoring and detection systems suitable for IPM systems in open cultivation. Since 2017, she has been actively serving as aprogram secretary for the top sectors Horticulture and Starting Materials and AgriFood, contributing to the development of the Knowledge and Innovation Agenda (KIA) Agriculture, Water, Food.
